ABILENE, Texas — Nearly 24 percent of college admissions offices use Facebook to learn more about potential students, according to a Kaplan survey.However, Abilene colleges said they use Facebook in a different way.“The integration of Facebook with recruiting has increased over the years,” Mark Lavender, Abilene Christian University Director of Admissions, said.ACU does not use Facebook as part of their admissions process, but they do use the social networking site to help recruit new students.“This is an opportunity for students to not only interact with ACU people, but also to interact with each other,” Lavender said.McMurry University uses their Facebook admissions page as a networking device.“We use Facebook as a way for students to get in touch with what McMurry is doing,” Randy Willis, McMurry Admission and Recruitment Coordinator, said.One student we spoke to thinks it is not beneficial for colleges to check potential students’ Facebooks.“It’s kind of your own personal life. You are making it public, but I think it’s hard to judge someone based off a website,” Ashton Brillante, ACU Freshman, said.Hardin-Simmons officials agree.“There are so many other variables that trying to pick out something on a social networking site, like Facebook, doesn’t tell us the story,” Jim Jones, HSU Associate Vice President for Enrollment, said.Abilene schools said they would much rather talk to potential students on the phone rather than checking up on them on Facebook.
